Cultural Roots Tours
During our Cultural Roots Tours, we’ll explore New Brunswick’s past with stops at important heritage sites that help us celebrate and appreciate the cultural mix of our province. We’ll meander the scenic Northumberland coastline and visit traditional Mi’kmaq communities, and French Acadian or historic British sites. Each tour combination features traditional fare that may include the unique experiences of baking bread in the ground, or a real French Acadian kitchen party. We’ll also enjoy storytelling around the fire-pit and discover centuries old gifts from Mother Earth.

French Acadian Village Tour – Discover the history, culture and cuisine of the French Acadian way of life focuses that focuses more on the enjoyment of the journey, than its destination. As we walk the winding wooden footbridge leading to Île-aux-Puces, we enter the world of Pays de la Sagouine. The characters in period costume give life to the ultimate French Acadian experience where history, comedy, music and food await.
Elsipogtog Mi’kmaq Heritage Path – During this is a one-of-a-kind immersion experience with Mi’kmaq culture at Elsipogtog First Nation, guests learn traditional teachings and insights that will help connect the past to present day Mi’kmaq life. Following a traditional smudging ceremony, a Mi’kmaq knowledge keeper will lead you through the pristine, forested Heritage Path where you’ll learn traditional and time-honored ways of using Mother Nature’s gifts and medicines to enhance personal and community well-being. Guests will leave enriched by a deeper understanding and connection to the cultural Mi’kmaq way of life.

A Taste of Metepenagiag – Your personal, guided tour of this 3,000–year-old Aboriginal community and Heritage Park begins with learning about the lives of the First People to call this land ‘home’. Learn about the importance of the Augustine Mound and Oxbow archaeological sites, and their direct link to the present community’s proud Indigenous heritage. We’ll then join Mi’kmaq knowledge keepers around the campfire and hear stories of historic Metepenagiag orally passed down through the ages, and an ancient, traditional way of life.
Beaubear’s Island Colonial English Tour – The multicultural history of Beaubears Island spans thousands of years, beginning with the early First Nations people who fished and hunted on the Island. In the mid-1600s, the Mi’kmaq welcomed the first French Acadian settlers who came in search of fish and furs, generously sharing their local knowledge to aid the newcomers. After 1765, English-speaking settlers arrived in the Miramichi area and under their ownership, Beaubears Island emerged as an important shipbuilding site.
